I want to whiten my teeth before my wedding, and couldn’t afford professional whitening at the dentist as I lack dental insurance, so I’m an “over-the-counter” guinea pig. Of the 3 I’ve tried, these Premium Whitestrips are the best!

History:

First, this summer, I tried original whitestrips (You’re supposed to use them for 14 days I believe). I made it about 4 days before giving up, after which I would sporadically use them but never enough to notice any whitening. The reason I didn’t use them as directed? First of all, I found them almost impossible to wear comfortably. Almost as soon as I had put them in (I would use them during my 45 minute drive to work) I would start salivating so much that the bottom teeth strip would start to come undone and get soggy. (Very attractive mental image, I know). In addition to that annoyance, they made my teeth VERY sensitive, to the point where I decided it just wasn’t worth it (when you live in FL in July, it’s no fun to not be able to drink cold water!!!). Then, this fall, I tried the Night Effects, which you brush onto your teeth right before bed, then wash off in the morning. OH HELL NO!!! THis stuff is just WRONG. It’s disgusting, seriously. It doesn’t form a “coating” it sits in a goopy mess on your teeth, gets all over your lips, tastes like a**, and drives away your significant other. So, here I am, with unwhitened teeth and a wedding in 2 months, so I try again, with new, “premium” whitestrips.

Cost, Packaging:

They are a bit pricey ($30 at Walgreens–I think you can get them slightly cheaper at bulk stores rather than drug stores). However, if they work, $30 really isn’t much considering the cost of professional bleaching. They come in a cute little box with a mirror inside (so you can use them away from home) and each strip is individually wrapped. They come on a plastic backing that you peel the strip off–you need to get the hang of this to avoid too much gel on your hands, and be ready to use it immediately after opening!

Use:

As mentioned, be sure to put them on your teeth immediately. Put the top teeth strip on first, as it adheres better (if you do lower teeth first, by the time you get the upper teeth strip on the lower one will be 75% dislodged). Once they’re in, there is a tendency for saliva to pool in the lower part of your mouth, but I just try to swallow it to avoid messing up the lower strip. They also move around a bit while you’re wearing them if you try to talk too much (and when you talk you’ll sound like a junior high kid with a retainer in–don’t answer any business calls with these on!)

Pain/Sensitivity:

Ok, so it says that they may cause “some sensitivity.” SOME? The first couple days, I didn’t feel anything. However, on day 3 when I first put the strips on it hurt so badly it felt like someone was boring a needle into my gums, I kid you not. It went away after like 5 minutes, but later that evening my entire jaw ached so badly I could feel it throbbing. I am now on day 5, and while I haven’t had anything quite that bad, I did feel the sharp pain again today, and my teeth are still sensitive (i.e. if I breath in sharply I can feel it in my teeth.) Also, anecdotally, a friend of mine tried them and after 2 uses stopped because she said it hurt so bad she started tearing up! I’m sure this isn’t true for everyone, but be forewarned.

Effectiveness:

I haven’t completed the run (I’ve finished 5 days so I have 2 days, or 8 strips, left). However, I do think my teeth look a tad brighter/whiter. They aren’t as white as I had imagined they would be though. I will update when I finish the pack and let everyone know if they are any whiter. Also, they mildly stain patches of my gums white, but only temporarily. Its still very odd though.

So the jury’s still out until I finish, but so far they seem to be ok other than the pain!
