When it comes to cosmetic maintenance, keeping my teeth as white as possible wins the importance award hands down. I have big teeth or “horse teeth” as my friends so kindly refer to them. This means I have to keep my teeth as white as possible since they are pretty much the first thing people see when they approach me. I have used almost every dental whitening system on the market, from the original 14 day Crest Whitestrips to the Colgate Simply White system. Many of these products have worked great while others have been just a waste of 20 or more dollars. Like the original Crest Whitestrips, the new Crest Premium Whitestrips offer some excellent attributes, however, obtaining white teeth does not come without certain compromises.

Crest’s Claims:

Crest claims that their new premium product contains the same enamel safe ingredients used by dentists (hydrogen peroxide). The strips can be used almost anywhere at almost anytime (I would definitely avoid using while you sleep). Crest Whitestrips are an easy and safe way to remove 14 years of stain build in just 7 days and results will last up to 12 months thereafter. Crest recommends that for even whiter teeth that you purchase a second box and do another 7 days of treatment.

The Product:

Crest Premium Whitestrips come in a box filled with 28 individually wrapped strips; 14 designed for the upper front teeth and 14 deigned for the lower front teeth. The strips look and feel exactly like the original Whitestrips and are easily applied by first separating the perforated strip from the back liner, then placing both the lower and top strip to your front teeth. The strips are approximately 1-2″ in length and contain a thin layer of whitening gel. This whitening gel consists of concentrated hydrogen peroxide (apparently more peroxide than the originals). The strips are to remain on your teeth for exactly 30 minutes and should be used twice every day for 7 days. Crest states that you can use the strips for 30 minutes 2 times back to back. This means that instead of using them once in the morning and once at night, you can use 1 set for 30 minutes and another set for 30 minutes right after the first set. One should note that leaving the strips on for longer than 30 minutes each will not make teeth whiter.

This product also does not whiten dentures, caps, or any dental work for that matter.

Ease Of Use:

Crest Whitestrips Premium are probably the easiest/effective dental whitening system on the market. Despite the odd shaped bottom strip which will often slip off my lower teeth when talking or even just sitting in an upright position, overall they do a great job conforming to my front teeth. When first using these strips you may have a few problems removing the strip from the back liner, however this problem should be short lived as you get accustomed to this procedure.

My Results:

The original 14 day Crest Whitestrips took about 3-4 days before they made any significant difference in the shade of my teeth. The Premium Whitestrips, on the other hand, provides almost instant results. It was around the end of the 1st day of use (2 applications) when I noticed a difference in the shade of my teeth. Just days later the yellow stains from both coffee and missed brushings were almost completely gone. After the full 7 days of use (using them once in the morning and once at night) my teeth were just about as white as I had them when I was using the original 14 day kit. In other words, my teeth were extremely white after just 7 days. During the time I was using Crest Whitestrips Premium, not everything was peachy keen. To explain, my front teeth became extremely sensitive. Even though Crest claims that this sensitivity is not dangerous and would subside over the course of 7 days, it never did. Apparently this is not too rare since a friend of mine who used the Premium strips at the same time complained that it gave her extreme pain. She ended up quitting after the 3rd day and giving me the rest of her strips. Thankfully the sensitivity ended almost immediately after I had completed my 7 day treatment.

Note: You can help avoid sensitive teeth by not brushing your teeth before use, however this did not help me.

My biggest complaint with Crest Whitestrips Premium would be the time period that Crest claims the results will last. Crest claims the results would last a full 12 months, however my teeth began to yellow just a few months after my 7 day treatment. About 2 months after my first 7 day treatment I have purchased yet another box of the Premium Crest Whitestrips to achieve the same excellent initial results, only this time I am helping them stay white by using the Crest Night Effects every night (about $14 for 14 nights).

Premium Ingredients:

Purified Water, Glycerin, Hydrogen Peroxide, Carbopol 956, Sodium Hydroxide, Sodium Saccharin.

Price and availability:

The price for a 7 day kit cost anywhere from $30-$40, this is about $10 more than the original 14 day kit and almost $20 more than Colgate Simply White. This product is not as easy to come by as many over the counter dental whitening products. I have only been able to find Crest Whitestrips Premium at larger discount stores such as K-mart, Target, and Wal*Mart.

Final Thoughts:

If you are impatient to get whiter teeth then I definitely recommend this product over the original 14 day kit. However, if you have 14 days to spare then I suggest just going with the original 14 day kit and saving yourself 15 bucks. I’m going to rate this product at 4 stars, it does whiten teeth dramatically in just 7 days but it doesn’t give significantly better results than the already excellent 14 day kit. Still, I would definitely use this product again.
