The background
After having suffered through braces as an adolescent, it’s really important to me that my teeth look good. Despite never drinking coffee or tea, my teeth have yellowed somewhat over the years. So, a few months ago I decided to try some whitening products. Crest Whitestrips Premium Dental Whitening System Strips were my first choice.
The Product
Crest states that Crest Whitestrips Premium Dental Whitening System Strips are “clinically proven to remove up to 14 years of stain buildup in 7 days” using a dentist approved blend of whitening ingredients. The strips, made of very thin, rubbery plastic coated in the peroxide gel, are applied for 7 days. By the last day, you are expected to see a notable difference in the colour of your teeth.
The Price
I found the price of Crest Whitestrips Premium Dental Whitening System Strips to be rather inflated. While a whitening treatment is quite expensive at your dentist’s office, several trained people are involved and the equipment is specialized for the procedure, which helps to justify the price. In the case of the Crest Whitestrips, you are on your own with the set of 14 strips. I suspect that the fancy plastic box, complete with mirror, is likely worth more than the strips. I find it difficult to understand why these strips should be retailing for $30-40.
The Instructions
This whitening system includes a great deal of instructions. They cover when to apply the strips, how to apply them, how not to apply them, minimizing pain from sensitivity, and other questions and problems you may have. Now that I have used other whitening products, I can confirm what I suspected then: These instructions are overly detailed. The small variations they suggest will scarcely impact your experience (as is noted in other reviews), but will make the process feel more complicated than it should.
The Application of the Strips
The thin strips are set on thicker strips of plastic, off of which you peel them. Once peeled off, it’s very easy for the strips to fold onto themselves, which causes the peroxide gel to become unevenly spread. This happened with several of the strips, from the point where I peeled them to the point when they were finally set on my teeth.
I found that the strips were not deep enough to cover the entire frontal surface of some of my teeth. For instance, my canines (which are not unusually large) were not entirely covered by the strips due to the shape of the strips. (The strips vary in depth, with the center being larger than the sides.)
On the other hand, the area that is meant to cover approximately 4 teeth in the center was too deep, and rested on my gums once folded over. This caused a painful stinging sensation, which resulted in excess salivation. This, in turn, caused the gel against my teeth to run, obviously reducing the product’s effectiveness. (You can cut the strips with very sharp scissors, which is what I opted to do to remedy this situation.)
The Results
After 3 treatments, I noticed that my teeth were getting whiter. However, I began getting intense shooting pain in my teeth. I have never had sensitive teeth, but I had suddenly developed a sensitivity to anything hot, cold, acidic, sweet — it seemed that nearly everything triggered intense pain.
I did continue with the treatment, however, simply because I was committed to seeing a result. When I concluded the treatment on the seventh day, the results were not what I would have hoped. I was very careful in my application of the Crest Whitestrips, ensuring that I followed every detail to the letter, and making certain that the strips made full contact with all my teeth during every treatment. Unfortunately, I ended up with stripes of various colours on my teeth. My teeth remained very yellow near the gumline, somewhat yellow at the top, but very white in the middle. This was certainly not a pleasing sight.
Most bothersome, however, was the pain, which was now even more intense. For 3 weeks after the treatment, I had throbbing pain in my teeth almost constantly, whether or not I was eating or drinking. It took a full 2 months before this sensitivity subsided.
Can We Expect More From a Home Treatment?
Absolutely. I have since used Rembrandt 2 Hour White and was thrilled with the product and result. It’s actually the reason I am writing this review. Until I used Rembrandt 2 Hour White, I thought that Crest Whitestrips Premium Dental Whitening Strips were probably the most a home user could expect from a whitening product. I no longer believe this to be the case. Not only did Rembrandt 2 Hour White produce beautiful, evenly white teeth in 2 hours, it was far easier with the use of plastic trays. Best of all, I experienced absolutely no pain, before, during, or after. In addition, the price was much lower, at $21. (I wish I could write a review but the product is not listed on Epinions!)
In Conclusion
Crest has attempted to provide a good whitening system to home users. However, there are clearly some usability and comfort issues that have been identified by a notable majority of consumers that should be reviewed by Crest. This product is a good start but improvements will be required if they wish to retain repeat users in the future.
I found Crest Whitestrips Premium Dental Whitening System Strips to be overly priced, overly complicated, and overly painful.
For these reasons, I would not recommend Crest Whitestrips Premium Dental Whitening System Strips.
