The Bowflex Xtreme is Extreme. It is extremely solid, extremely easy to assemble, extremely easy to use and provides an extremely good workout.

I have this machine for 2 years or so now. and given a recent rediscovery of my workouts, I felt compelled to write this. I looked at machines when I initially bought it and again recently with a friend. Both times I was looking at machines with real weight. I looked at the square plate/pulley systems, the free weight systems and then decided to look at a number of resistance-based systems (rubber bands, bows, and others). It was with hesitation that I went with a resistance based system because I was not certain that I’d feel I got a good workout with anything but real weight. Still, because resistance based systems are lighter and can be moved after assembled, I decided to keep investigating.

Here is what I found out:

1) Magentic Resistance is still somewhat immature. Most vendors get mixed feedback and lot’s of machines seem to break early into their lifecycle.

2) Rubber band based systems seems to be old hype and not the preffered choice any longer.

3) Bowflex customers seems to be very, very, very happy with their investents. This actually surprised me because Bowflex is very expensive…. and when you pay so much, expectations are set high. Still Bowflex earned top scores from its customers.

4) Bowfle knock-offs are knock-offs and with the possible exception of one of the Weider machines, they do not even begin to compare to Bowflex.

So… I bought a Bowflex. AND.. the results were excellent. There were a few good surprises:

1) The bows are very smooth. The weight is somewhat variable.. but it feels very natural.

2) The pulleys are very quiet and reliable. Lots of machiones using pulley systems were alreaady broken on the store floors. Bowflex seemed to always be in excellent condition. The cables did not fall off the pulleys and tear like so many other brands seem to do. I saw some machines that we not even functional because the cables came off the pulleys and jamed between the pulley wheels and the pully holders. The plastic coating pulled off and the machines looked like junk. Bowflex is designed exceptionally well. An real enginnering feat.

3) The machine is as solid as a rock. Nothing squeeks, nothng moves (unless its supposed to).

4) the workouts were excellent from day 1 and continue to be excellent.

Bottom Line: If you are shopping for a machine and are going to spend any decent amopunt of money, go for a Bowflex. Sometimes, you really do get what you pay for !
