Bowflex the industry juggernaut producing millions of machines a year. You have undoubtedly seen numerous infomercials about their machines, they’ve been running for years. In fact, you probably know several people that have a Bowflex machine. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of Bowflex’s products but many people are so they are worth looking at if you’re in the market.
Bowflex is probably the most widely used home gym system available on the market. You see ads for them all over, especially on late night TV, and their telemarketers keep your phone ringing. With a “convenient” monthly payment plan and that ever present voice in the back of your head telling you to exercise more…how can you deny the sales pitch?
What sets each model is usually the number of exercises that can be performed, determined by equipment additions, and the amount of maximum resistance available. Other than that they are basically the same with only minor differences in quality and comfort.
Bowflex Claims: (www.bowflex.com)
Women lost an average of 16.96 pounds of fat and men lost an average of 27.95 pounds of fat in only 6 weeks! These people didn’t workout every day either. They worked out three times a week for only about 20-30 minutes. Hey you can do that too! You can take 20 minutes out of your day for these kinds of results.
Former NFL star Bill Romanowski even claims, “I’m in better shape than when I started playing pro football 16 years ago.”

Xtreme Workout:
The Bowflex Xtreme XLU is not as low priced as the Bowflex Motivator ($699), but it’s close. So what do you get for the extra dough? Not a whole lot really. About 10 more exercises, a longer warranty, and a more comfortable bench. It also takes up a little less space since the bench is vertical rather than horizontal. It looks a little more appealing too.
What sets the Xtreme XLU apart from the Motivator equivalent (the XL)? The warranty for one, the Motivator XL only has a 2-year warranty, where as the Xtreme XLU has a 7-year warranty. The Motivator takes up a bit more space (6′ x 6′) and also offers less exercises (a little over 50). The Motivator XL is ~ $30/mo or $899, the Xtreme XLU is ~ $33/mo or $999. So, the Xtreme is the better choice.
Will the Xtreme XLU help me lose weight and build muscle? Yeah, of course. Any exercise will help you lose weight and build muscle. The PowerRods provide 210 lbs of resistance. Now, this isn’t much when it comes to leg exercises but for most upper body body exercises it should be enough for most people. If it’s not then you can purchase additional PowerRods, to bring your total up to 410 lbs. There are exercises for virtually every muscle, so you’ll have no problem building the physique you want.
Is the Xtreme XLU easy to use? All Bowflex machines are simple to use, once put together. If you’re having difficulty you can consult your owner’s manual which is simple to follow and the fitness guide, which helps you with each exercise.
Does the size of the user matter? Well, I’m 6′4″ and 230 lbs, it works for me just fine. It may be more difficult for really short users, especially children. If you have young lifters you may want to look into a model that has a horizontal bench which might be easier to use. This is a good machine for a young teenager or even a college athlete (with the resistance upgrades). As for weight of the user…I’m not sure. I would suspect most anyone that can fit on the bench should be fine.
Accessories:
If you’re a real Bowflex fan, you can announce it to the world by purchasing their Bowflex apparel…they offer hats, t-shirts, and sweatshirts. Bowflex also offers supplements, though I can’t say how good they are. I recommend EAS for supplements. PowerRod upgrades are available along with t-bars and foot harneses. There’s also a machine mat to protect your floor, “The Bowflex Body Plan” book, Bowflex workout video series, and Bowflex i-Trainer software.
Cost: $999.00
S&H: $99.99
Orders take about 4 weeks to ship (via UPS Ground service).
The Good:
+ Quality
+ Comfort
+ Results
+ Ease Of Use
+ Price
The Bad:
- Amount Of Resistance
- PowerRods (In General)
- Shipping & Handling Cost
- Assembling The Machine
- Low Number Of Exercises
- Size
Conclusion:
The biggest thing that sets the Xtreme apart is that the workout bench sits vertical, not horizontal. It’s similar to most machines you’ll find in a health club.
There is assembly required when you receive your Bowflex machine. And be prepared to spend at least a couple of hours working on it. You’ll probably want someone to help you, I recommend someone that’s patient and good at doing this.
If you’re shopping around for equipment Bowflex should be considered. However, don’t get caught up in all the hype. There are other really good products available. The Weider Crossbow is one of them. Though I do not prefer the Bowflex Power Rod technology I do recommend their products. If you lift at least 3 times a week you will see results, this is true with any piece of equipment. Be kind to your wallet. Start out with simple exercises and low cost equipment and once you’ve established a routine and find yourself committed to a workout regimen, and seeing results, then you can justify buying expensive equipment. All in all, the Bowflex Xtreme is good - try it out.
