I had a bowflex for two years, which had a Lat Bar and Leg extension, and although it increased my strength, there is a limit to how much it can increase. The bowflex, and other machines like it, boast that you cannot wear out the rods, in this case, the power rods. This is pure fiction. Not only was I able to wear out the rods for this bowflex, I was actually foolish enough to think that since I was pushing two hundred pounds (according to the rods) that I must be getting incredibly strong. Wrong. The rods were simply being worn in and the 200 pounds of resistance that they were supposed to provide was really much less. I learned this by adding the two 50 pound rods which I had never used with two of the used ones, and found that I couldn’t lift them at all. I put Bowflex’s guarantee to another test by trying to bench some REAL weight, and I found I could not lift a single rep with two hundred pounds, or even 100 pounds on a traditional weight bench.
And for those of you who wish to lose weight, there is only one way to do that and it dose not involve weight training.
The bowflex also boasts that it will give you a good cardiovascular workout by using the so called “Rowing Feature”. Believe me, after trying several different methods to lose the rolls around my belly for the past year, I can honestly attest to the fact that it takes more than “rolling” on a sliding seat to get rid of fat.
That is not to say I am not successful in ridding the fat from my body and adding the muscle. There are surely other ways these goals can be acquired, and I will briefly tell you here how it is done, so consider yourself lucky if you ran across this because these are the only ways to achieve these goals. Take it from someone who has tried many things.
Losing fat: Jogging and dieting. That’s right. Get your lazy behind up from that chair and air-conditioned room and get on that road. I went through this hell having never done anything like it in my life, where I would get exhausted from jogging for less than a minute and would have to stop. Perfectly normal. Walk for a bit until you catch your breath and jog for another 30 -20 seconds, or your limit. Repeat until you reach a mile. If you are so overweight and out of shape to where you cannot jog, then start by walking. Do not under any circumstances jog for the rest of that week if your leg muscles are still in pain. WAIT until they heal. Your goal is to be able to jog a mile non-stop. By the time you reach that goal, you will have a flat stomach, believe me. Dieting is another factor, where lean meat such as turkey or center loin chops and fish, along with whole vegetables should be the only thing you consume, with fruits for snacks. Avoid seasoning on the meat until you have reached your goal, since they have a lot of sodium and the dressing you will use on your vegetables will have all the sodium your body will need. I like to steam all the vegetables together (lettuce, cabbage, green beans, carrots, and tomato slices) and use a dressing like Italian dressing. Just remember, you will not live this way forever, only until you have reached your goal of having a flat stomach, which should be a couple of months. After you got that flat stomach, you can have better snacks with your HEALTHY MEALS, and visit an Italian restaurant once a week without worrying about regaining the weight, so long as you stay on that jogging routine. I jog perhaps once or twice a week and am able to maintain a stomach I had when I was a teenager.
Gaining strength: Use real weights that do not wear out. A pair of Plate-dumbbells should be adequate. You can do curls, shoulder extensions (flap your arms like the wings of a bird while holding the dumbbells) or reverse curls (with the weight behind your head, bring it over your head, nice and straight). I just place my shoulders on a chair and throw my legs up on a bed to do bench, having these dumbbells which can hold up to two hundred pounds (which I have not reached yet). For legs, I like to hold the dumbbells to my chest and do some deep squats. For calves, you can simply add a lot of weight to the dumbbells and hold them at your side while you stand on the balls of your feet and go up and down. The jogging also contributes to a lot of leg strength.
And there you have it. Simple and not nearly as costly as all the scams that will do nothing for you. I hope you’ve learned and will stop looking for easy ways to get in shape. The jogging after a few months will become an enjoyment after it dose not require as much energy, especially if you found a nice place to go jogging.
