I am 45 years old and bought the Bowflex Xtreme 2 six weeks ago, after my gym membership had expired (and hadn’t been going to the gym for a few months. I bought the machine at a local fitness equipment dealer for $1,300.
I spent about 3-4 hours assembling the Bowflex - but did take a lot of breaks. It was fairly easy to assemble and I had no problem with the cables even doing it by myself.
I did have one problem with the machine that one other reviewer mentioned: on some exercises the power rods would hit the mid-height cross-bar. I called Bowflex and they were very helpful - they sent me a kit to fix it: essentially a triangular shim to install below the rod box to tip the rods further away from the back of the machine.
So far I have been working out on the machine for about six weeks - doing a split routine with 3 days on followed by one day off. I have noticed good increases in strength and some increases in muscle definition. I was in fairly decent shape before I started working out with the Bowflex.
The upper body exercises are excellent and are fun and the it is easy to change the set-up between exercises. I have more problems with some of the leg exercises - especially the squats with the straight bar. It is very difficult to crawl under the bar in the low (starting) position. I have solved this problem by doing squats with the hand grips rather than with the bar. Also the leg attachment is really only good for one exercise - the leg extension. I tried doing leg curls with it but found it extremely hard on the knees (maybe I’m not doing them correctly - they don’t show that exercise in the training manual or on the video). Also , I have found the adjustable grip hard to position on my foot for some of the leg exercises, but I think I will buy a more traditional ankle cuff to use instead.
Overall, I am very pleased with the Xtreme 2 and would highly recommend it. It is probably not for “hardcore” bodybuilders or weightlifters but for most people it would be and excellent piece of fitness equipment.
