I have been researching a home gyms for several months. I have always considered Bowflex to be a poor alternative to weights noting that they are only sold in “infomercials” and hard to try out before you buy. I’m 42 years old and 6′7″ and 265. I have lifted most of my adult life, but in the last 3-4 years I just stopped. I started running instead to loose weight, but soon got burned out on that. It became apparent I needed something to keep in shape.

I researched this site and others and became interested in the Bowflex Ultimate XTLU. At my size I need quality and strength. I was able to find a fitness shop about 40 miles from my home that sold the unit. I went over yesterday and negotiated a price of $1699.00. I thought that was a great deal but it gets better. The owner and staff insisted on putting it together to make sure it’s put together right. I came after work to pick it up in my truck. They loaded it in and told me the reason they put it together is that if anything goes wrong in the first year I can just bring it to them as is and they will replace it under their own warranty. Brought it home and set it up. Unloaded and ready in 10 minutes versus 2-3 hours. My lucky day.

Last night watched video and read the book. Had my first workout a couple of hours ago and loved it. Everything is as good as advertised and better. Some of the exercises are different for me because of my height (lat pull downs and other Lat Tower functions). I am required to position my self a little differently on the bench to get the full effect of the movement. Not a big problem because 90% of all other exercises work great. Even the leg extention is designed well and I am comfortable using it. My favorite so far is the squat. I is very smooth and stable. My problem is I was able to do all 310 pounds for 3 sets of 10 reps in good slow movements. I need the 100# upgrade.

Bench is very good and challenging. My pecs are sore because you use muscles your body does not use in a free weight bench. I could go on and on about this product. It is very solid. I’m big and fairly strong. This thing does not shake or move will lifting. It provides quiet movement that gets tougher as you get closer to completion of your movement. It’s different than free weights but the burn and muscle fatigue is unbelievable. If you are looking at this product, find a place to try it out first. I think you will love it. It’s expensive, but I found in my home gym search that you get what you pay for. Well worth $1,699.00.

One more thing. The design is great. I’m very tall and enjoyed my workout and could easily use this machine. My wife is 5′9″ and loves it. My 10 year old son tried some of the exercises and I found nothing he could not do at a height of less then 5′. Great design!
