As a physician, I’m interested in staying healthy but I’ve found that tougher and tougher to do as my practice has grown. I was once an avid freeweight lifter and loved the feel of pushing and pulling iron around the gym. I still think freeweights are great, but let’s face facts. If you don’t have a regular spotter and workout partner to go to a gym with, and you don’t have 90 to 120 minutes a day to kill at the gym, freeweights and gyms lose a lot of their appeal. It’s been about 8 yrs since I worked out regularly and at age 36 my metabolism is no longer up to the effort of keeping the fat off. I was growing overweight, losing muscle and began to feel like a hypocrite when I counseled patients on diet and exercise. It was time to get back into a healthy routine.
I knew that if I joined a gym, I wouldn’t go. The last thing I wanted to think about after leaving the office at 6:30 or 7:00 and starving for dinner was going to a gym. I knew I needed a home workout system so I could workout at my leisure. Home freeweights were out of the question for the reasons outlined above. My wife was not about to spot me on a benchpress or doing squats. The home machines I’ve used in the past were clunky and had limited range of motion. I had used a bowflex machine at a hospital rehab about 6 yrs ago and I remembered being impressed with the resistance and range of motion. Hence, I went and ordered the Bowflex Ultimate.
The shipment came in about 3 weeks, sooner than expected and the machine was pretty easy to put together. The fit and finish are top notch as it doesn’t wiggle or creak in the slightest. There’s a nice guide included which displays many different exercises and how to do them.
As for the actual workout experience and results, I’m extremely impressed. The resistance is nice and smooth and makes no noise. A major pet peeve I’ve had with workout machines in the past is that the range of motion is set and there’s no use of stabilizer muscles in the exercise. This, I feel, leads to lower quality workouts and results. The majority of the exercises on the Bowflex require you to stabilize the joints involved so you get a true freeweight feel in having to concentrate on proper form. This also gives a real nice burn to the muscles and stabilizers being worked. Since it’s a machine, though, I don’t have to worry about lifting to muscle failure without a spotter.
All in all, I love this machine. The only cons I can see are that it does lack that visceral feel of picking up freeweights. Also, If you are a serious lifter you will likely max the machine out on several exercises. I feel the Bowflex is an excellent alternative for those who have the motivation to work out at home and don’t plan on becoming powerlifters.
