Reasons I bought it
I purchased the Bowflex Ultimate because I wanted a effective workout at home, with most of the benefits of the type of equipment found at a gym. And it certainly meets my requirements.
Being a gym member for many years, I haven’t had any major issues with my health. I’m no model wanna-be nor am I a perfectionist. It just makes sense to live a lifestyle with at least some physical conditioning.
I recently cancelled my ($77/month) gym membership at the start of last summer, because I felt like it would be better to engage in outdoor sports rather than be in an indoor gym when the weather is nice.
Since the weather got colder and it was time to start-up the workouts again, I decided to explore my options, as I wanted to eliminate shlepping to the gym, waiting for equipment, smelly locker rooms, athletes foot, etc.
My choice was the Ultimate based on the variety of exercises, the maximum resistance, and the more durable construction compared to other models. It makes all other all-in-one home fitness machines seem worthless.
Delivery, Packaging, and instructions
Delivery was very prompt (2 weeks exactly), and the unit was neatly packed in 4 manageable boxes all weighing 70lbs. or less.
All the components were logically arranged and easy to find. Instructions were well written with no major mistakes. Building the unit took right around 3 hours.
The workout manual and diet guide are fantastically written. All the common sense and correct facts that most other (even books) don’t sum up as well as the Bowflex manual. Hats off to the sensible people responsible for printing such a smart and well produced manual. Bravo!
Durability & looks
The unit is very solidly built, heavy gauge matte-painted steel. It looks like a quality machine immediately. After thorough use, it still feels as if brand new, if not better. Nowhere near any signs of wear.
However, be sure you have at least an 8′x10′ area for it.
Workouts
The Ultimate does over 90 different exercises. However, I wouldn’t see myself fitting all of them into a regular routine. Maybe 3 dozen on a regular basis, but it’s nice to know that you can mix things up. Especially if you start making serious body defining progress.
All the exercises I’ve done have been smooth and effective. The “long time it takes to change exercises” other reviewers have wrote is essentially a moot point, because if after a set you immediately begin the changeover process, it’s less than 30 seconds, which is a perfectly acceptable rest time between sets. And by rest, I don’t mean take a nap.
The leg curl attachment does work well, but you just need to be aware that if you don’t watch it, you can bump your knee on the bolt on it.. but if you are careful, it can be avoided.
All in all, I feel as if I’m using a machine that’s just as effective as a typical professional gym machine.
Conclusion
First of all, if you’re looking to get some definite results, you cannot go wrong with this machine.
For those who think it’s too much money, and would rather spend their cash “renting” the use of a gym, I totally disagree.. For the money you spend on the Ultimate, you now own a piece of fabulous equipment that would have only bought you 2 years at the gym. The return on investment is terrific. It not only pays for itself quickly, but you also get a lot of your own time back!
If you’re not the type that can get motiviated to do a workout at home, perhaps you shouldn’t even think about working out at all. Home or Gym, you still need the intestinal fortitude to make a life decision.
So no, it does not 100% take the place of the massive amount of equipment typically found at a gym, however, it does cover most of it!
Well worth the money, very well-built, and HIGHLY recommended.
