Bowflex is probably the most widely used home gym system available on the market. You see ads for them all over, especially on late night TV, and their telemarketers keep your phone ringing. With a “convenient” monthly payment plan and that ever present voice in the back of your head telling you to exercise more…how can you deny the sales pitch?

This is a good machine, despite the odd resistance provided by the Power Rods. You can make gains in your muscular strength, size, and endurance. It is also possible to reduce your bodyfat with the Bowflex Ultimate. The added cost, over the Power Pro, is mainly from the added exercise components. The overall quality of the Ultimate is pretty much the same.

One of my friends was looking for a new exercise machine and of course was caught up in the excitement of the Bowflex infomercial. I suggested that he get the WEIDER CROSSBOW and a pair of running shoes. Which, by the way would have cost less than one half of the Ultimate. In any case, this is what he went with. It took a week to get the machine once he had ordered. Assembling the Ultimate took my friend and I about 2 hours. So, I’m certain it would take about 3 or 4 hours to do it solo.

So, what makes this better than the PowerPro?

Summary:

For an extra $1,000 you get; 100 lbs more resistance, all the exercise attachments (lat tower, leg press, squat, etc), and 30+ more exercises. With the Ultimate they are cheaper than adding them to your Power Pro. If this is worth the extra money.

Final Say:

I am appaled by the cost ($1,999 or $66/month) of the Ultimate, and the other models as well, but if you can afford it and want it really bad then this may be a good gym to have in your house. You’ll want to choose an aerobic activity because the rowing capability of any Bowflex isn’t that good. When you buy the Ultimate you will feel your wallet become feather lite, but you will be on your way to attaining your fitness goals. You may want to check Ebay.com for a used one, it could save you a few hundred dollars. I looked recently and they have quite a few of them. My friend ended up returning the Ultimate and going with my original suggestion…the WEIDER CROSSBOW and a pair of running shoes. He actually is tossing me a few bucks to use mine. We enjoy working out together, it’s more fun than lifting by yourself.

To answer the question; Is It Worth The Cost? I would say NO. Not when you can get a great machine, the Weider Crossbow, for far less than the Power Pro! However, the Bowflex Ultimate earns a C+.
