I’ve had my Bowflex Ultimate XTLU for about 2 months now and this is one of the best investments I’ve ever made. I was in high school when Bowflex first came out and I was not in to lifting or strength training at all. With all the exercise crazes that have come and go, I told myself “when I grow up” and if they are still around, I’ll get one. Not only are they still around, but they are extremely popular and much improved.
I used this site for most of my research and it confirmed what I already suspected, most of those who have them, love them. But it seems like a couple things have changed since some of the reviews were first posted. One is the warranty. On several reviews they mentioned a 5 year warranty. The Ultimate model comes with a 10 year warranty. The second difference is shipping I will detail in a bit.
I won’t describe what comes with the machine, I’ll assume you’ve read about all that on the Bowflex website. What I will say is that ordering was simple. I started to order online, but I wanted to use one of those credit card checks that some cards offer to give you a lower APR than what the actual card has. But there was really no option for that on the site, so I just closed it out and figured I’d call later. A Bowflex rep contacted me via email stating he saw I had filled out some information and offered assistance by either phone or email. He also said he could give me a discount not available otherwise if I ordered through him, so I did and got $200 off. I don’t want to post his email on here, but if you would it like email me (disco_vampire_203@yahoo.com) and I’ll email it to you but be sure to put BOWFLEX in the subject so I don’t discard you as junk mail.
Now as discussed in other reviews, the price is definitely an eye-opener. As others have said, the machine will pay itself off, especially if you are a paying gym member. Keep in mind the convenience and that you don’t have to deal with the hassles of the gym. But if you are like me, and don’t have $2000 on hand, financing is there. I just wanted to throw a couple ideas out there for you. Especially now in this not-so-great-economy, those who have decent credit can get a credit card with a low APR (as opposed to Bowflex’s 20%+). I was in the process of switching from one card to another, but decided to put the Bowflex on the card I was going to get rid of, cut up the actual card and that was my financing. You can have much more flexibility in the payments. Also stated by others, willpower is must. If you are gonna spend this much, you better be sure to use it, right? Well, as many would agree, it’s always best to workout with a partner. I have 4 good buds that come over at least twice a week (at different times) and workout with me. They “rent” the machine for $5 a month. So that’s $20 a month to help with the cost, and they in turn have someone to motivate them to exercise (2 of them worked out occasionally, the other 2 not at all). If you have a friend(s) that would be willing to do this, that could help with the cost plus you would have a workout buddy(s). The last suggestion is that you could skip the Leg Attachment if you are not hardcore about working out. You only get 2 exercises out of it and the Bowflex does have “equivalents” without the attacment. While I do think the leg attachment is better for those 2 exercises (leg extension and leg curl), if saving $200 could make or break your decision, then don’t get it. You can always add it later.
Now on to the shipping. I got machine in just over 2 weeks. Some of the reviews said it arrived in 4 boxes. Mine arrived in 6 boxes, but the others’ may not have gotten every attacment. Some reviewers complained of it arriving on different days. Mine arrived on one day, albeit two different times. Plus they gave me a tracking number, so I knew what day it was coming and was sure to be home to accept it.
The assembly was easy, but by myself it took me just under 3 hours. You have to keep all the packaging if you think you may return it within the 6-week period, but I guarentee that you won’t want to.
Before putting together a workout routine, my buddies and I tried each exercise and noted an ideal weight. The amount of different exercises seems impressive on paper, but wait til you keep trying them all. This is truly impressive. Previous reviews got it right about the quality of the machine. It’s very quiet and very smooth. As far as the weight comparisons to free weights and other machines, there is a difference, but nothing drastic. I think it just depends on the person. For chest work, I have to go lower than what I did in the gym, but arms are higher.
The only negative side of the Bowflex Ultimate is the space, though this is hardly a complaint. For those who can afford it outright, probably make big bucks and have big houses with big rooms. If you are like me and closer to the Average Joe, your space is probably a little more limited. So be sure to consider that. A 10ft X 10ft space is good when it’s in use, considering the leg attacment and the fact that the power rods bend perpindicular to the bench and leg attachment.
I have not tried any of the other Bowflex models, but I have heard that the Ultimate is the best you can get. While going the the Power Pro would have saved me over $500, I am very glad I got the Ultimate. I want the best for my health and this machine definitely is.
So if you are serious about staying fit and maintaining your health and/or you dislike the gym or are unwilling to join one, definitely get the Bowflex Ultimate.
