I’ve seen reviews compare the Ultimate to the Ultimate 2. You can’t compare them. In my opinion, they should have given this model an entirely new name - it’s that superior.
I owned a standard Bowflex for several years, and although I liked it, I didn’t feel that the construction quality was up to par. I’m 6′3″, 225 pounds, and I wore out the sliding seat and bench several times. There is no danger of that with the Ultimate 2.
The main things about the U2’s construction I appreciate are the heavy duty tubes used to form the frame, and the thick, strong seat and bench. I can really go to town on this thing and don’t feel like it’s going to collapse under me.
From an exercise standpoint, the U2 is phenomenal. I have a herniated disc in my lower back that prevents me from working with free weights the way I used to, so the power rod resistance is perfect. Don’t get me wrong, you are not sacrificing resistance for convenience here. I’ve built 20″ arms and a 49″ chest using only this machine. I love being able to do exercises that would normally kill my lower back, such as bicep curls, while lying down on the bench.
I find power rod resistance to be very natural. Yes, it is different than free weights, but the progressive resistance feels a lot like muscle working against muscle. The resistance gradually increases throughout the rep, giving you more resistance at the point in the rep where you’re strongest (at full contraction of a curl, for example). Once you get used to the resistance, which takes one or maybe two workouts max, you will love it. I’m sure someone who has worked out for years with freeweights will find this resistance “weird”, but the same would hold true of someone who switched from years of a Bowflex routine to free weights.
You can work all the major body parts really well. My upper body routine consists of chest presses and flyes, bicep curls and preacher curls, tricep pushdowns and extensions, shoulder flyes, and seated pulldowns and rows for my back. Lower body is squats (the squat attachment is AMAZING - for the first time in 10 years I can do squats without hurting my lower back!), extensions, and curls. I’ve never tried to perform the 90 advertised exercises; The 12 - 15 I do regularly work my entire body.
The adjustable width of the pulleys is another really great feature worth mentioning. You can switch from bench presses, where the resistance is perpendicular to your body, to flyes, where the resistance is at about 45 degrees, in about 10 seconds. I take advantage of this feature on bench presses, shoulder flyes, and tricep pushdowns, and the effect is phenomenal.
Overall, there is no other all-in-one machine at any price that I would replace my U2 with. Very satisfied with it.
