Due to the recall of the Power Pro model, Bowflex has done an exercise machine reshuffling. They’ve ditched all their models except the Ultimate, Xtreme 2 (new), Xtreme, Sport, and Versatrainer. With the Power Pro, there were two safety problems:
1) Bench may unexpectedly break when in the incline position and collapse.
2) The Lat Tower attachment may rotate forward and fall.
I think these safety problems came as a real surprise to most Bowflex users and fans. The most common injuries caused by these safety deficiencies were head, neck and back injuries.
How safe is the Sport model? I guess we’ll have to just wait and see. I’ve used it safely, but then it’s a new machine and I’ve only used it about a dozen times. The Sport is pretty much just like every other Bowflex model in it’s ease of use and functions.
The Bowflex Sport:
The Sport model is obviously aimed at the same price conscience consumer as the Weider Crossbow. I think Bowflex will probably do pretty well with this model because it’s solid competition. Like with other models though, I still don’t like Power Rods. They don’t provide very good resistance and it isn’t even resistance through the entire movement.
I think the bench is improved, it’s a lot more comfortable. The pulleys work better too, the pull smoother and quiter. Interesting how competition can force a company to make a better product for a lower price, hmm…
I don’t find squats to be very comfortable with the Sport (or any model). It seems ackward and for most people it may be difficult to keep good form. The aerobic rowing function is slightly improved, the seat glides better. But, for tall people, I still think the aerobic function sucks. The bench would need to be extended a good 10-16″ to be really good. The leg extension/curl attachment isn’t that great for tall people either. The most annoying thing is that it’s not adjustable. I don’t think it’d be that difficult or expensive to make the leg attachment adjustable.
When switching between exercises you just simply change the handles and adjust the weight how you want it. Changing the weight resistance is a snap. Just attach the proper number of the Power Rods and you’re good to go. The Owner’s Manual does a good job of explaining your new Bowflex. To learn about the exercises read the Fitness Manual that comes standard, it’ll tell you how to properly perform each exercise. Remember, good form is essential to building muscles and keeping safe.
The Sport is good for body building, body sculpting, or just toning your muscles and losing fat. If you’re into circuit training then a machine like the Bowflex Sport is ideal because it’s so quick to switch exercises.
Bottom Line: The Sport is essentially the Power Pro with more exercises. They just gave it a make over and reduced the price. It is a worthy machine to consider.

Final Comments:
The Bowflex Sport is a solid Bowflex machine. They know what they’re doing (with the exception of the Power Pro) and this is a good machine, in my opinion. If you’re in the market for a home gym you can’t really pass by Bowflex without giving them serious consideration.
The only thing you’ll not get from the Sport, unless you’re short, is a good aerobic workout. So, you may want to look into an aerobic machine.
I recommend the Bowflex Sport for everyone from athletes to teens to the elderly. Couch potato types would do well to watch TV while working out on the Sport. Check it out, I think you’ll like it. And for $799 the only legitimate competition is the Crossbow.
