Let me start by saying my name is not Hulk and I have no trouble finding clothes to fit me. I don’t bench 350 and I don’t shed my shirt in public every chance I get. I’m a regular guy who would love to be in better shape. That never ending quest led me to this purchase.
Having owned these dumbells and used them rather extensively for a year, I felt a few added comments might help those persons who were on the fence with this purchase. I can’t comment on the powerblock system which is very similar to this because I haven’t used them but this system has been great for me.
First, if your used to the gymnasium and are thinking of a home gym setup, you might be inclined to go with cast iron dumbells that all gyms (at least in my experience) use. There’s nothing wrong with that. Its what I did and that was fine for a while but they do take up a good amount of space. I love the space saving design of the selectTech dumbells and really never regretted the change.
Second, maybe your hung up on the cost because it is a big hit. Dicks sporting goods price on cast iron dumbells and plates is around $.40/lb so dumbell pairs 20-50 would run you around $200 not counting the stand (think anywhere from $75 to $100. So, to me if your going to go out and spend $300 on those, why not kick in an extra $50 and get the select-tech and stand which is what I gave for them at Dicks (free stand promotion was going on).
Third, some others have commented that the construction of the selectTech dumbells might be lacking with the plastic and metal construction. I’ve banged these around quite a bit and so far no problems.
Are they perfect, NO. But honestly, my only gripe is that when changing between weights, the mechanism can stick from time to time. When it happens, you just jiggle the dial a little and no more problem. Like I said, it doesn’t happen often, but it has happened.
My suggestion, try them at a local retailer and try out the powerblocks, too. Then make an informed decision. I love mine and wouldn’t want anything else.
