Overview

Bowflex SelectTech combine 15 different weights into one space saving package. The weight starts at 5 pounds and runs up to 52.5 pounds in increments of 2.5/5 pounds. This weight range should be more than enough for most individuals, however, Bowflex also caters to the more advanced trainers with their new 1090 model (which runs from 10 to 90 pounds) if you need more weight. They also provide a lighter model with 2.5 to 20 pounds. This should eliminate any complaints about the inability to add more weight.

The main advantage with the bowflex would be the space they save as well as the convenience they provide. When buying , you have 2 alternatives to SelectTech. The standard hexagonal , which you’ll find in almost all pro gyms, and the removable plate systems which are common to many space deprived home gyms.

With the hex head barbells, some people may argue that they’re more durable than SelectTech. I’d disagree with this since I’ve seen hex heads break off more than once. With that eliminated, the issue with hex heads is that they can take up an enormous amount of space depending on how many sets you have.

The removable plate systems are still a bit bulkier than the SelectTech’s due to the number of plates you must have, but the real reason the Bowflex’s are better is because of the convenience factor. It can be very time consuming, but more importantly decrease your motivation, to have to constantly change plates to achieve the desired weight. With the Bowflex’s, you simply turn 2 knobs and you have your preferred weight.

Function

In short, these pieces function extremely well. They feel like quality pieces of equipment that will last a good long time. The handles are notably better than hex heads and even have a little cushioning material to increase your comfort. The weight selection knobs are also very sturdy, covered with rubber, and produce a resounding click as it passes by each weight setting. The actual weight plates are covered in vinyl which significantly reduces most noise.

The weights come with weighted plastic stands that nicely hold the plates in their proper places once the are lifted out. Also available from Bowflex is an ergonomic metal stand that places the weights at about waist level for easier use. I personally didn’t find the metal stand worth the price.

Pricing

The one dull point in an otherwise shining repertoire would have to be the SelectTech’s price. These are NOT cheap weights. So much so in fact that I almost gave these 4 stars for this factor alone. As a comparison, standard hex heads, which should last just as long as these, would have been about half the cost for the same weight selection.

Should You Buy these?

With the above price point in mind, one really needs to assess how much the space saved by these is worth. If you find you seriously need the extra space, I can definitely recommend these - so long as you can afford them.
