I asked for these for my birthday, and I am incredibly happy that I did. I don’t have space at home for a full dumbell set, and I hate messing around with a bunch of plate changing. This product fits my needs perfectly.

I like to do 15-20 rep sets with no more than 1 minute rests in between, sometimes only 30 seconds. Doing sets like this requires the weight to drop slightly for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th sets. Dialing in the weight with the SelectTech is fast and easy, freeing me up to stretch for 30 seconds in between sets instead of having to mess with changing weight plates. I just dial in the weight for the next set and I’m ready to go.

A little more information on how these work. Each dumbell comes with a stand that is slotted to hold the dumbell and all of the plates. The weight dials on the are adjusted while the are on their stands. As you turn the dial on each end of the dumbell, an ingenuous locking mechanism locks onto the plates needed for the weight that you want to lift, and the extra plates stay behind on the stands when you lift the off.

It is INCREDIBLY easy to use, and it’s actually fun to play with different weight settings. I find myself going for “just one more set” so I can use the more. Why not, when it’s sooo easy to lower the weight? :-)
They can be found online for $350 with free shipping. WELL worth the cost considering the cost of a full dumbell set. Yes, it’s a lot more than an adjustable plate set, but the time, hassle and SPACE that is saved with this product makes it worth it. They also look good, unlike your average bar and plate set.

The fact that you can go all the way up to 52.5 pounds per dumbell means that pretty strong weight lifters can get a lot of use out of these just as easily as somebody with a lot less body strength. (But see my update below…)

My only real concern is with the POSSIBILITY of the locking mechanism wearing out or getting “off track” over time. They seem very well built though, so this may not ever be a problem. (After 6 months there aren’t any locking mechanism issues)

**** UPDATE 12/19/05 ****

6 months later, they’re still working great. My *only* issue is that I now need to go heavier than 52.5 lbs for some exercises because I am doing heavier lifting along with the lighter, short rest types of sets that I described above. That means I will have to buy a set of 90lb (per dumbell) Power Blocks, which I can expand later if I eventually go over 90 lbs per dumbell on my stronger exercises. I will probably keep the SelectTech for things like forearm work where I need more range of wrist motion.
