Noting that I work out on a regular basis is an understatement as I find myself in the gym hitting the irons early in the morning when most of my co-workers and compadre’s are in bed resting. However fitness has become a part of my daily routine, not only is it great for my health but it keeps my waist line in check. I purchased the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells approximately three months ago from the Sport Authority after playing around with a pair they had on display.
The primary reason I purchased the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells was for them to serve as an upgrade and substitute for my in home free weight system. While I still maintain my membership at Gold’s Gym, having an in home back up work out regiment is vital, especially around the Holidays when the gym hours fluctuate like plates being put on the rack. Although I have never been to a gym that carried the Bowflex Dumbbells, I’ve seen plenty commercials on MTV and read lots of articles about this company visiting their online site long before my initial purchase.
The Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells may look as if they are light or perhaps flimsy, but looks are deceiving as this is a solid piece of equipment with lots of trapping body builders and those looking to add dumbbells to their workout regiment will appreciate. The first thing that impressed me was the soft black rubber plastic grips around the hand bar. I usually wear my weight lifting gloves but, the plastic rubber grips are so soft you really don’t need the extra padding. Not only are the grips soft but they are excellent for keeping the dumbbells in place when lifting. I also like the easy to use dial style weight adjustment system it’s great if you are working out with someone else, in addition you can do a variety of different exercise routines anywhere from solid lifting to a more aerobic styled drill.
One of the best exercises for me is when standing behind my incline bench doing single arm preacher curls. I don’t want to sound like their TV commercial but there are a few other things that make these dumbbells exceptional, especially the adjustable sleeve like weights they are 15 3/4 inches long by 8X9 inches. The changeable 2.5 lb (1.13 kg) increments are easy to handle and maneuver. The easy to use dial and red on black readable weight numbers allow for easy adjustment, without having to re-rack and grab a heavier set, like I do at the gym. I can keep the same weights, cutting down on my racking time and overall training/lifting session. Thankfully, I don’t have to be a rocket scientist to change the simple tumbler rotating system that automatically fastens to the desired amount of weight I want. Plus there is a free DVD that helpful for newbie’s.
The only two issues found with the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells are their price point and its odd shape. When compared to the free weight found in some of the discount department stores, Bowflex falls on the expensive side of the track. Additionally, when comparing their size, especially there lack of narrowness when aligned with the body for traditional dumbbell routines you might find the weights bulky and hard to maneuver depending upon how much weight you use. With the weight loaded I found them a bit tricky when doing Zottman dumbbell preacher curls, but easier to use when doing alternating dumbbell curls. I’m not going to make a big issue out of this as this will be an issue regardless of the free weight you use when you start packing on the pounds curling 50 pounds per arm. On the whole, I think the Bowflex will beat the other weights hands down when it comes to space efficiency.
Overall, I’m giving the Bowflex SelectTech 552 Dumbbells four and a half (4 1/2) out of (5) stars. The equipment is solid and will last a long time. Although the initial price point might be a little high, their overall value is worth it, as I suspect the dumbbells will last a life time, or until the next high-tech dumbbell system hits the market. In the end there are a lot of different free weights to choose from, however Bowflex’s easy adjustment dial up styled weight adjustment system and the dumbbells portability make them a must have for a family style home gym owners, or workout enthusiast who travel.
