Whew. I got the unit about 3 months ago. First time visiting this sight. Wanted to add my opinion to the rest of them. I’m a push it to the edge kind of methodical health enthusiast. I love a good workout and love to see results. I’ve always have a good physique, you know lean and fit’s into designer jeans. Just not happy with the tone.
I wanted a machine in the home to allow me the maximum amount of time hogging a machine to myself. No gym and peak hours. And I got one of these with a lot of doubt that it would be what I was looking for. The range of exercises and the promise of isolating muscle groups for maximum gain was the main attraction.
Then came the machine. In 5 boxes. Three weeks later as promised. Proflex, Lat Bar, Leg attachment, Chest Bar, Squat attachment and an additional 410lbs upgrade resistance pack. I got the Proflex with the 310lbs installed from the factory already.
The assembly took me two & 1/2 to 3 hours tops. Then I looked up the bench press, military, incline press, Shrugs, squats and then proceeded to tear into a workout. Blocked out any distractions and just went headstrong into my own agenda. Lots of sweat and an hour and a 1/2 later I’m exhausted and loving it. The feel is lose to tight going from start to full extensions. Different from free wieghts but cooler to workout with for more reps and more sweat.
I don’t know what all the negative is about the sounds of the rods. Did you ever hear what a gym sounds like? The fasteners could be tougher for the money but I’ve only had it a few months, nothing really worn in yet. As for changing between accessories. The first few times is understandably clumsy because you don’t know how things fit together yet. You get over this later as the process becomes routine. Just like adjusting the seats on a Universal or Nautilus in a Golds or Balleys.
Hey did I mention a rower. Yeah this thing does rowing. I won’t be using it much, but tried it a few times. First attempt was like walking and chewing gum at the same time—clumsy. Once I got the pattern down pat it was O.K. I’m never liked this at the gym so I guess it will be last on my list of exercises.
The unit looks sharp in my spare room. like it hopped of a page from a modern art magazine.
I’ll update this regularly to report progress made. For now I recommend it to all looking for a complete workout in the home.

Hey just for kicks I looked up an old piece of equipment I used to own http://www.soloflex.com/ . Didn’t know they were around anymore. They used to run infomercials like the BowFlex guys do. I bought one of them when I was back in High school over 10 years ago. Cost alot as I remembered. Not as much as the Bowflex. I remember it helped me to suck weight down from 198lbs to 141lbs in my wrestling days. Yup, it made me happy to be a teenager.
The Soloflex Muscle machine had 34 Iron Pumping exercises as they put it. And yes it worked. If you had the drive, determination and patience to change your image. I did. I went from the fat geek to the thin stud in a year.
By comparison today. The Bowflex out matches the Soloflex with the sheer number of exercises. And the resistance was not as smooth as the Bowflex. Sort of slow climb to a sudden rapid increase. The Bowflex does this too but doesn’t feel as severe. It makes for an easier time getting a full extension.
Here’s a good plus for the older system…it was a simplistic design. A freestanding unit that was strong enough and sturdy enough for you to do dips on from the top of it. Can’t say that about Bowflex. But that’s just it, Bowflex is different. And it filled in some voids that the Soloflex fell short of on range of exercise, range of motion, and aerobics.
I sold my Soloflex back in the early 90’s to my cousin who still has it in Illinois. He’s still looking good too. But he’s also drooling over my Bowflex. By comparison I’d say that the Bowflex is safer on your muscles and joints, the Soloflex is safer on the sturdiness due to it’s simple design. I remember some painfullness from those Soloflex workouts though, the only reason I parted with it, I felt I could damage some muscle tissue, who knows.
I’m VERY happy with the Burn and no pain from my Bowflex. Both are good machines and the Soloflex is still available for about $1,000.00 on the Website. But, the Bowflex has the advantage with the feel of a full extension on it and diverse offerings of exercises. Also the Bowflex can be folded up (when all the accesories are removed) and rolled out of the way. The Bowflex can’t adapt for free wieghts and the Soloflex can, but then again resistance training is the sole focus of the Bowflex, that’s why it’s designed better for it. If you want a similar feeling on the Bowflex to using free wieghts on the Soloflex then get the chest attachment and set it wide. That angle sort of simulates it, but gives you the advantage of not biting off more than you can chew in free wieghts before muscle fatigue or failure sets in.
If I had the option of buying my Bowflex back in the days I would have. Then I’d still own it today and my cousin would have had to buy a new one for himself;-)
