I wanted a Bowflex for sometime before I broke down and spent over 1700 dollars for it. I bought every option offered. I took the 6-week challenge and wound up returning it. The follow is a summery of the shortfalls and surprises that I did not realize prior to ordering it.
First the basic model is compact and does not take up a lot of room. However, if you add any of the attachments (squat, leg press, tower bar) you have just instantly lost that feature. Before storing the Bowflex all attachment have to be removed from it first. This in not a huge inconvenience. You should beware though, the advertised twenty-minute workout must now include 20 minutes to assemble and disassemble the machine.
The second major problem that I found is the flex rods themselves. The resistance is far from consistent. The further the rod is bent the more resistance is offered. Also there is a variance in the rods themselves. For instance, if you were to put on the two 10 pound rods in addition to the 30-pound rod you should have 50 pounds of resistance. Which should equal one 50-pound rod. THEY DONT. The 50 pound rod is considerable stiffer; offering much more resistance. The problem with this is that without consistent incremental steps you could get trapped between weights. Resulting in a hard time progressing if strength training is your goal. Additionally as you workout on the machine the power rods rattle together making your workout noisier then it needs to be.
Some additional random thoughts. The weight (because of the power rods) is pre-loaded on the handles prior to starting an exercise. This is a problem because the handles (bench press/flies) start about a foot below/behind you. This is a real pain rolling around the bench trying to pickup the handles behind you that weigh 150 pounds each. To make an adjustment to the weight requires you to get up and move the rear of the machine (both sides). Because the weight is not consistent you spend a lot of time doing one rep (to light/heavy) then getting up to try another combination. Big waste of time! Lastly since there are only pulleys behind your shoulder any of the over 60 exercises requires you to get into some lets just say- less then optimal positions.
I would say that the over all construction is average at best. I know, I read all the reviews prior to buying mine. Everyone says how great the construction/design is. Well that is what I thought when I got mine. However, at high weights (around 250-300 and above) it is obvious you are stressing the machine. Example lat tower bends, machine shakes, leg attachment lifts off the ground). For over $1700 I have to change my opinion and say it is average at best.
After ordering the Bowflex it took around 7 weeks to get it (too long). When I called to return it they offered to take 200 of the price (nice, but not enough). Lastly when I returned it took well over a month to get my money back (even though the machine only took 5 days to get back to the company). I have since bought a machine called the profession trainer 3000 from http://www.exerciting.com/. It is all that Bowflex is not. If you are considering buying a Bowflex do yourself a favor and check out the PT3000. They offer a free comparison video. Youll be happy you did.
PS If I sound hard on the Bowflex it is because I believe in getting what I pay for. In my humble opinion the Bowflex is not worth half of it’s asking price.
