The cons:
The first thing that I must mention the price. $1000 gets you the BowFlex Pro; they will throw in the leg extension for free if you ask. Shipping was another $130 and on top of that is the tax if you live in WA state. At over $1200 this is quite expensive for something that is a fairly simple machine.
BowFlex touts that you can do 60+ exercises. Some of the ones they count don’t even use the rods (a couple abdominal exercises). While most exercises get the job done, not all do a good job of isolating muscles. In particular, I’ve really only found one resistance exercise that isolates my abs without requiring the arms.
The pros:
It may sound that I’m displeased with my purchase, but I’m really not. While I probably get a better workout at a gym, the convenience of having a home gym is a huge plus. Instead of having drive out of my way, wait for equipment, etc… I can use my time more efficiently. Because of this, I find that I end up working out more days/week with my BowFlex. In college I started working out at the gym and found it took me about three months to gain 15 lbs (from 135 to 150). After graduating I stopped and now I’ve gone from 140 to 150 with the BowFlex in about 8 weeks.
While the BowFlex works may well for someone of my thin build, I am unsure if it will do the job for someone seriously trying to bulk up.
Update:
The rods seem to weaken over time. It is evident by the way the rods continue to fan out further and don’t return to their original position. One small disadvantage compared to a machine that uses real weight.
I’ve also noticed that 30 + 10 + 10 is less than 50, meaning that the combination of the 3 smaller rods does not give the same resistance of the 50 lb rod. I would guess this is because the smaller rods weaken faster. I also wish they would have included a 2.5 lb rod to fine tune the weight.
Another observation… the bench wobbles if you lean to once side (which you probably shouldn’t be doing in the first place). I would prefer it to be a bit more stable, but its manageable.
A benefit over some other machines is the freedom of movement which forces you to use muscles to stabilize the weight. Also during exercises like the bench press, your right hand can’t cheat for the left since each side utilizes its own set of power rods.
