Bowflex Power Pro XTL For many years now I've been trying to stay in shape with aerobics and weight training. Since we moved to our new home, I now live wa...
I’ll get right to the point…it is an awesome machine. I lifted weights for over 16 years, but my shoulders just couldn’t take it anymore. After several cortisone shots, I was persuaded by my doctor to do something besides weightlifting to stay in shape. So I thought I’d give the Bowflex a try. I am always leery of anything sold on TV, and also leery of most exercise machines, but after one workout, I knew I had a keeper. It definitely does what they say it will do.
I’m 5′11″, so I fit into it comfortably. None of the exercises felt awkward or uncomfortable. I was expecting a ‘rubber band effect’, so I was pleasantly surprised to find the resistance was very smooth and even. As they say in the infomercial, it really does feel like a ‘muscle working against a muscle’. No joint stress, and a good burn in the muscle. I ordered the extra 100 lb of Power Rods, but to be truthful, the standard 210 lbs will be plenty for most people. The leg extension works really well, and the sliding seat is great for finishing the lower body workout. The machine gives me a great workout, whether I’m doing a full-body blast, or simply squeezing out a few sets of curls whenever I feel the need to get the blood pumping. That’s what nice about having such a versatile piece of equipment right there at home, my ‘gym‘ is always open.
The most important feature for me is the design, with the two handles instead of one bar. With both sides having to work equally, it ensures symmetrical development. It also is great because your hands aren’t locked into one position throughout the exercise as with a barbell or Soloflex. For example, when doing seated rows with a normal palms-down grip, try a few sets with a palms-up(curl) grip. It will stimulate a different area of your back, and therefore adding one more exercise to your list to choose from.
The only complaint I have is that there are too many plastic parts. For example, the bench support bracket, which holds the bench in an inclined position, cracked while I was doing a set of bench presses. The replacement, though, has held up for two and a half years, so maybe the original part was defective. Still, I’d feel more secure if that piece and also the rod holder box were made of metal instead of plastic.
That single complaint isn’t enough to make me dissuade anyone from purchasing a Bowflex. I’ve used mine practically every day for the last three years, and will probably buy another one if and when this one wears out. My shoulders are virtually pain-free now, and I’m still getting quality workouts.
In truth, you’re not going to become Mr Olympia by working out on a Bowflex. But you will become stronger and more fit. Now, quit reading this and go get one!!
