First off, let me say that I am pleased over all with my bowflex. I’ve had it for about four months, and I originally paid about $750 (local pickup) to buy this model (about a year old) from someone on ebay.
[For the pros and cons of buying a bowflex through ebay check out the article at:

Bowflex is a good home gym, far superior to other home exercise equipment I’ve purchased off TV (I know, I should know better) over the years. For someone like me (a somewhat self-conscious woman who’s never been enamored with the public nature of the gym), it’s great. The Bowflex allows me to exercise all parts of my body. I tend to stick to about 15 core exercises, sometimes doing variations of these to keep things interesting.
My bowflex came with the leg attachment. I use it occasionally, but I don’t feel you need it or any of the upgrades for a full workout. I actually prefer the hamstring exercise that’s done by sitting on the sliding seat and hooking your heels over the edge of the bench (shown on the latest infomercial) to the laying on your stomach one.
I would recommend the Bowflex Power Pro over the Motivator because you end up doing more with that sliding seat than you’d think. I actually use the rowing feature regularly. I detest treadmills and exercise bikes, but since I live in Seattle, it isn’t always possible to go outdoors to get an aerobic workout (read: rain). I put my Bowflex in a room with a TV, and I row for about 20 minutes 2-3 times a week while watching the tube. Since I can fold the bench part up, the Bowflex doesn’t get in the way. Since I live in an apartment, the compactness is really a nice feature.
I have more trouble sticking to the diet than doing the exercise, but even without curbing my eating a lot, I’ve noticed results. I haven’t gotten bulkier (which I know many women worry about), but there is more definition, especially in my arms, shoulders, and those evil thighs. I’ve lost a few pounds, but more importantly lost some of that nasty body fat.
So, what are the bad points you may ask? The price is the most obvious thing. Since I’ve gone back to school, I haven’t had as much money to throw around. If you are in the same boat, you may want to also consider buying a used Bowflex (they seem to keep up very well; I know someone who’s had a Bowflex for 8 years, and has used it regularly without needing to get anything repaired).
Also, the infomercials can be deceptive (deception on TV, imagine that). There’s no way that really buff guy who walks you through the Bowflex demo gets that big from Bowflex alone. This is not really a concern to me, but the guys may be looking to bulk up. Free weights are really the only way to get that size. Bowflex is more for people who are just looking to get fit and trim down. If you want to get big, you should probably keep your gym membership.
