I went over the purchase and assembly in part one, in case you missed it, here is the link: http://www.epinions.com/sprt-review-7A69-45020C5-39D1F200-prod1. In part 2 I plan to tell you about the actual use and more importantly, the results I have seen after the first 6 weeks.
Using the Bowflex: The Bowflex is different, it takes a little getting used to. After a week, you will be proficient at it.
THE GOOD:
It only takes a little time to switch from one exercise to the next.
The bench is easily removed for standing exercises and adding or removing weight is a snap.
You can get a full body workout in as little as twenty minutes, but that is at a fast pace. A normal paced workout will take thirty to forty minutes.
There is little noise, aside from your grunting, from the bowflex. The only real noise is from the seat sliding during rowing and from the power rods clapping together sometimes.
There are enough different routines and exercises to keep your workout interesting.
The resistance is very good. It is continuos with a full range of motion. Very close to free weights. Your muscles will not know the difference, they will feel the burn.
THE ANNOYING:
The handles are designed to be adjustable, which is great, but they don’t go back to the original position on their own. If you don’t pay attention when you are sliding the grips back to the end, you could have them just a few degrees from being straight. I know it doesn’t sound like a big deal, but when you are trying to do an exercise with your hands slightly out of alignment it is VERY noticeable. This problem is easily fixed, just take a little extra care to make sure the grip slides evenly.
There are small rubber O-rings that hold the retainers that keep the grips out of the pulleys. The O-rings tend to slide up the cables and under the pulley. The results are: a popping sound every time the O-ring passes the pulley, and the retainers slide up and down the cable. The only thing I can think of to fix this would be glue.
The small non-skid strips that are used for leg exercises don’t stay non-skid for long. Mine began to wear the first day, after two weeks they were just stickers.
Some of the exercises, while possible, aren’t really comfortable without an attachment, and example is the leg extension. In the manual there are instructions for leg extensions without the attachment, but it is very difficult to do a rep with proper form.
I don’t think the power rod labels are accurate. Two tens and a thirty don’t feel like as much resistance as a single fifty.
The Bad The price tag!
My Results My goals were to gain muscle and loose fat. The Bowflex helps with both, but don’t be deceived, it WILL NOT make you thin on its own. To loose fat, you have to change your diet. You can gain muscle without changing your diet, but you will never see it with out a low fat diet.
I chose the "strength training" program because I was more interested in over all body stregth and gaining muscle. I exercised two muscle groups one night per week, eg Monday was chest and shoulders. At the end of each workout session, I could see the muscles "pumped" from the work. I could feel the burn after each workout and after six weeks, I definately have more muscle to show off. People at work have noticed! My waist size has decreased two inches, and I have gained four pounds! That’s right, I lost two inches and gained weight! I did not loose as much body fat as I would have liked; why? Because I don’t have the will power to stick to the diet they include for fast fat loss. I have no doubts that it will work, maybe one day I will be able to adhere to it.
Is the Bowflex worth the money? Regis, give me my million for answering this question! I can say YES without a doubt! For me it is absolutely worth it. I have a machine that fills my needs nicely, can be moved when needed, and is very convenient. It is not better than free weights as far as resistance goes, but when it comes to safety and space, Bowflex is superior. Bowflex may not be for everyone, I encourage you to try it before you buy it if you can, if that isn’t possible, make sure you understand the return policy in case you don’t like it. I am keeping mine!
