I decided to make a serious commitment to get in shape this year, but have very little free time to join a gym. After talking to many friends who are into working out, I researched the Bowflex system. Their website is very resourceful, and they will send you a free video in the mail. After using the Bowflex for nearly 2 months, I can definitely see and feel a difference.
There are many models and extras to choose from. I chose the Power Pro over the Motivator because of the superior construction and sliding rail seat for rowing. I chose the XT model (which allows leg extensions and leg curls) to focus on my leg muscles. I also added the foot straps and rowing bar to get the most use out of aerobic rowing. Their finance plan was easy and their salespeople were polite and knowledgeable. Shipping took about 2 weeks and cost about $150. The unit arrived in 2 large, heavy boxes, and took me about 2 hours to completely assemble. Assembly DOES require some basic tools like screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenches. Im fairly mechanically inclined and still got hung up in a few places on the directions, so any non-technical people may wish to ask for some assistance from their tech-savvy friends. Also, plan for a place to setup your Bowflex before it arrives (footprint sizes available on the website). While not exactly portable, the bench does collapse up and the base is on wheels.
The unit is very well-made. I was a little concerned about the molded plastic bracket that serves as a support when the bench is inclined, but I have had no problems with it. The unit includes 210 pounds of power rod resistance, and this is great for starting out. The resistance feels FANTASTIC with none of the dangerous momentum of free weights. Also, because the resistance builds as the rods flex, you will generally select a resistance LOWER than what you would for a similar free weight exercise. The action is very smooth and even. It only takes a few seconds to adjust the resistance, change the bench position, or set up the leg extender. The Bowflex performs about 60 different exercises, but a general workout centers around 12-15 exercises and takes about 20 minutes. A typical workout for me involves arm curls, arm raises, benchpress, resisted crunches, lat pullovers, sidearm curls, inverted crunches, seated row, leg presses, leg extensions, and leg curls.
The unit comes with a workout video to detail some key exercises, a thorough exercise manual, and a 1,000 calorie-a-day, high water, low fat diet plan. It also comes with the grip handles, and leg press belt. The grip handles accommodate a range of grip styles, and can also open to slip over the arm (for lat excercises) or the leg (for thigh exercises). The unit can also be upgraded if you later wish to add more resistance rods (310 or 410 pounds), a lat pull-down tower (XTL model), or squat plate (XTLU model). The power rods have a lifetime warranty.
If you are looking to get in shape and dont have time for a gym, the Bowflex may be right for you. The retail store gyms I researched all had free weights, were heavy and immobile once setup, performed fewer exercises, and took up more space. As the Bowflex is lightweight, performs an incredible array of exercises, and can be folded for storage, I consider mine an excellent investment in my health.
