Bowflex is not a machine for serious bodybuilding or weightlifters. All the guys I know use free weights or weight machines with the stacked weights. That being said, I didn’t buy it for that but for general toning and also from a lack of any serious research before I bought it. I have used it for a year now. I generally use it 5-6/week for 20-30 minutes. The 20 minutes 3 times week claim is rather silly since you will come nowhere close to looking like any of their models that they have on their tv ads. There are over 60 exercises that you can supposedly do but most people I am sure just do 5-8 of them. A lot of them are very minor variations off the same thing and some of them are plain silly.
The construction and finish are rather cheap although this is the lowest end model which could explain it. The paint is coming off and the screws/nuts/bolts regularly need tightening. I have noticed that the weights on the power rods seem a lot easier to to on the equivalent “real” weight at the gym. For example the 50 lb. power rod I can do a bicep curl 10 times fairly easily, but a 50 lb. dumbbell I can barely do one or two curls. I am concerned also about the tensile strength of the power rods being retained over time.
The upper body workout in general is pretty good. You are able to work all muscle groups pretty well although I found doing the biceps curls awkward. You sit on a bench face the power rods and you put your foot onto the bench and do your curl. The resistance through out the maneuver is not equal from the start of the motion to the finish- which feels very unnatural. I stopped doing it and just bought a cheap dumbbell set for this which is much better. One thing to realize is on their infomercials they have somebody doing triceps, than switching to a benchpress and then to a fly without changing weights to give you the impression that your workout will be very efficient. This is a very unrealistic situation. Almost everybody has different weight limits on the different lifts. I can bench press much more weight than I can do a fly and my triceps can do a little more than my fly. So I still have to get up a change the weights between each maneuver.
The abs are pretty lame. I found the resisted crunches off the incline not very useful. In their manual they count an ab excercise as doing crunches on a flat bench without any use of the power rods! What do you need a bowflex for?
Legs are pretty weak as well. Although the standard quad lift is good, the hamstring lift require you to balance your stomach on a small seat which is very awkward. The squats take awhile to set up and are also very awkward so I don’t really do them.
The main problem I have with the bowflex is the price. $1000 plus for this machine is simply too much. If I were in the market now I would by one the weight machines with the stacked weights or a crossbow which can do pretty much the same, both for hundreds of dollars less.
