Bowflex the industry juggernaut producing millions of machines a year. You have undoubtedly seen numerous infomercials about their machines, they’ve been running for years. In fact, you probably know several people that have a Bowflex machine. Personally, I’m not a huge fan of Bowflex’s products but many people are so they are worth looking at if you’re in the market.
Bowflex is probably the most widely used home gym system available on the market. You see ads for them all over, especially on late night TV, and their telemarketers keep your phone ringing. With a “convenient” monthly payment plan and that ever present voice in the back of your head telling you to exercise more…how can you deny the sales pitch?
What sets each model is usually the number of exercises that can be performed, determined by equipment additions, and the amount of maximum resistance available. Other than that they are basically the same with only minor differences in quality and comfort.
The Motivator:
The Motivator is not just one Bowflex. It is a series of four machines. The base model is the Motivator the others include the Motivator XT, Motivator XL, and Motivator XTL. The base model Motivator runs $699 and could compete well with the Crossbow if it had more features. If you decide to finance it, the payments can be as low as $25 a month.
Features:
- 45 Exercises
- 210 lbs. Resistance, Upgradable to 310 lbs. or 410 lbs.
- Vinyl Bench
- Single Function Hand Grip
- Ankle Cuff
- Folds and Rolls for Easy Storage
- Training Manual
- No-Time-Limit Power Rod Warranty
- 2 Year Limited Warranty on Materials & Workmanship
- 6 Week Fitness Results Guarantee
Perhaps the best feature of this machine, is simple the fact that you can workout in your own home. I know I enjoy that. It’s great being able to watch TV, or list to my massive MP3 collection, or whatever while I workout. Sometimes I still like going to the gym though. I like to be around people who have similar goals as me. And seeing other well built, athletically minded people really motivates me.
I don’t particularly care for the way the resistance works. It isn’t consistent through the entire movement and there isn’t much resistance in the first place. Even if you upgrade to the highest amount (410 lbs) that limits you on leg workouts. For benching and the rest that’s more than enough. The overall feel of the machine is pretty solid. It isn’t a cheap feeling or looking piece of equipment. It is pretty easy to put together, the instructions are simple and precise. By yourself you should be able to build it in under 90 minutes. One problem most people face is space. The Motivator is fairly large and when you’re working out the PowerRods bend down effectively making it bigger. You can’t exactly stick it in a corner and be good to go. It works best when its at least 4 feet from any walls, almost in the middle of the room (depending on size of room). If you have an apartment, I feel sorry for you, because the Motivator will likely become the focus of your living room.
Exercises:
Pretty much the basic lifts are covered by the Motivator. Things like bench press, bicep curls, and seated rows. Leg movements are limited unless you upgrade to the XT version (or higher).
Model Differences:
The differences between the various models are small. The main difference is the number of exercises you can do. While the base model boasts 45 exercises the top of the line model XLT only boasts 55 exercises. The cost of the machines start at $699 ($25/mo) and top out at $1,049 ($35/mo).
Final Say:
Bowflex machines are known for being rugged and comfortable. Many people like using them, so why not give it a try. I recommend trying one in a store or at a friends before purchasing. I personally do not like the feel of the PowerRods. They don’t give you a consistent amount of resistance through the entire movement. I’ve always been partial to free weights and thats mostly what I train with. You really don’t need fancy equipment to get into shape.
I would still recommend it but not over enthusiastically.
