I bought a Bowflex about three years ago when I was living in a small town that didn’t have a gym. I figured it would be a good way to at least keep all the muscles I had spent years lifting free weights to build, since I would be without a gym of any kind for the foreseeable future. Was I surprised when I started using it!
This contraption takes some getting used to. The constant tension is totally unlike that of free weights. The first few times I used it, I felt shaky and uncertain, thinking the whole time that I must be performing the exercises incorrectly. What I didn’t realize was that I was calling into play all sorts of peripheral muscles to help control the movement.
The Bowflex really packs a wallop when it comes to resistance training. I was shocked at how quickly I started adding more resistance (the "power rods" increase in varying increments from five pounds to fifty pounds per side)and bulking up in the process. I was already a big feller, but the Bowflex increased the size considerably, and refined my proportions, since I was using my muscles differently than I had in the gym with free weights.
This machine has proven to be extremely durable, and I have upgraded the weight on the rods, because, believe it or not, it is impossible not to outgrow this thing. I found that eventually, I didn’t have enough poundage on the power rods to keep up with the increasing loads I was able to work with. No problem. Bowflex will sell you new, higher-resistance rods for around $110.00. Considering the numerous ways that the resistance weights can be configured, adding an extra rod or two makes the Bowflex almost limitless in its versatility.
Mine has an adjustable bench for performing different types of exercises, and it is extremely quiet during operation, which makes it perfect for apartment dwellers or, as is my case, people without alot of room for equipment. This machine is especially good for beginners, since it is nearly bungle-proof, and is extremely safe at the poundages top end.
My 15 year old nephew has been using mine for about 8 months now, and is really packing on the size. He has put on about 15 pounds of great looking weight, and now he struts around with his sleeves rolled up and the top three buttons on his shirt undone. Ah, the wonders of testosterone.
