I’ve been using the Motivator 2 for just over two months. I’m new to strength training but wanted something (relatively) inexpensive and easy to use. I looked at other Bowflex machines as well as traditional weight machines with stacks. This was the least expensive option I found. I considered the less expensive Crossbow but had read bad things about it. Looking at the two machines side-by-side, the Bowflex is definitely better built.
I won’t go into the details and specs of the machine. You can find those online at the Bowflex website. (You won’t find the Motivator 2 on their U.S. web site but you can find it on their Canadian site.) Being a beginner, I can’t really compare the Motivator 2 to free weights or other machines. However, at this point I’m very happy with it. There’s a wide range of exercises that can be done on it and the 210lb limit will be plenty for me for a long time.
The Motivator 2 took a little less than three hours to assemble. The instructions were clear and easy to follow. I only had two minor problems. 1. The handle on the release for the seat to slide was broken. I was still able to release the pin, but the plastic handle makes it easier. I called Bowflex and they sent a whole new seat bracket to me at no charge. 2. There was a small plastic strip (about 1/2 inch x 3 inches) with adhesive back. No where in the instructions did it say what this was for. I ended up cutting it in half and sticking the two pieces to the chest bar just below the pulleys. This keeps the connector at the end of the cables from clanking when I finish an exercise.
As far as using the Motivator 2, I get a good workout using it. It can get a bit time consuming changing not only the resistance level, but the various setups. To overcome that, I ended up planning the sequence of my exercises so that I change setups a minimum number of times. The time it takes to change the resistance level isn’t that much.
I’m able to do most exercises that I want on the Motivator 2. There are three exercises that I do that aren’t shown in the manual: 1. Squats - it’s probably not intended for squats. When doing squats on this machine, the cables come from in front of you about a foot off the ground. This means the resistance is pulling down at an angle as opposed to straight down. 2. Leg Curls - contrary to another review, the leg attachment only allows you to do leg extensions (also, the leg attachment is bolted on and is not intended for easy removal). I found how to do this exercise by looking at the manual for a different Bowflex machine. Attach the ankle straps to each ankle and turn over face down(the cables cross)on the bench. The bench isn’t really as long as I would like for this and the leg extension attachment gets in the way a bit. 3. Leg Press - yes it comes with a leg press belt and explains in text form how to use it, but oddly, they don’t show this exercise with photos and other detail as they do with the other exercises.
Overall, I’m very happy with the Motivator 2. I get a good work out, the machine is well built, and the price was reasonable.
